It is the Sunday between Christmas and New Year….what does that mean to Fred and Laurie....a handicap doubles competition….that’s what!! Four squads – lane dressing before the 1st and 3rd squad – total handicap pin-fall to decide the winner – a simple but effective format – so on with some details!!
We are not sure why, but all squads were fully booked by mid-November, with over 30 disappointed teams on the waiting list. Our usual scorer - Ian Tabron - fell ill at the last minute, so we were extremely happy that Jackie Batty agreed to take his place at such short notice – Jackie and Fred made a great team, you were all so lucky they were not bowling!!
This was a very high scoring day with many notable performances from both teams and individuals. There were quite a few Junior bowlers taking part and I will mention some of their scores first. In no particular order – Henry Nice (224) – Alex Horton (237) – Jordine Lam (220) – Chris Lam (225+233) – Adam Ratchford (254+269) Charlotte Rathbone (233) Well done guys and gals!!
There were a few 240+ games bowled in the adults, they came from Mo Singleton, Norman Hamed, Cali Hannan-Woods, Wayne Greenall, Mark Sorrell, Rob Davies, Fred Lee, Nev Robinson, Kev Jaap and Gary Marcus. Fred Lee also bowled a 261 but that was not good enough for the high game of the day which went to Chris Maughan with a super 279….so close to perfection!!

There was some other stuff going on throughout the day, and knowing how much energy it takes to bowl, the Mums of Wigan YBC laid on a cake stall, organised by Cath Harmon. I for one appreciated that – Henry Nice’s cookies were “to die for” – he will make someone a wonderful wife one day!!
We also ran a bowling competition on the Nintendo Wii on the big screen. When I say we, I really mean Dave Harmon. He worked tirelessly all day, and well over 100 games were played. Our runner up in that was Martin Draper, one of our bowls mechanics. He lost in the final to a little girl!! – Sorry Martin!! - She was Issy Allen from the Sporting Club Tamworth YBC. Well done Issy!!
The two highest series of the day came from the experienced Nev Robinson with a 696 in the second squad. He was pipped by 6 pins in the last squad by young Adam Ratchford who bowled a magnificent 702 (269+198+235) – fabulous bowling Adam!!
So, on to our competition winners…
5th – 1336 – Rob Davies and Fred Lee
4th – 1340 – Nev Robinson and Norman Hamed
3rd – 1360 – Lee Fitzpatrick and Mark Sorrell
2nd – 1371 – Adam Ratchford and Chris Lam
1st – 1436 – Nev Robinson and Kevin Jaap
Our congratulations to Nev and Kev then – well done – a super performance by you both!! Interesting to note that the top four places all came from different squads, one from each squad!! Maybe a testament to how well and consistent the lanes played?
