Northern Grand Prix – Stop 4
NST Revival Tournament
The fourth stop of the Northern Grand Prix ran on the old NST (Northern Scratch Tour) format to help celebrate 50 years of Tenpin Bowling in the UK. A good entry saw many old faces who had played in the NST all those years ago joined by some new faces.
The format was 5 game qualifier, cut to 12, bowl 3 more games and cut to a 6 man round robin final. Those who didn’t make the first cut entered a 1 game Mini Eliminator Knock Out event, the winner of which received their entry fee back.
Round 1
Scoring was not as high as usual but one or two bowlers really got to grips with the lanes with Lee Jefferson 1176, Mick Ince 1118 and Norman Hamed 1111 leading the way. In game 4 Lee nearly went all the way just missing out on a perfect game by a rocking 7 pin as he bowled the day’s high score of 299. The cut was made at 1009 with Mark Smith claiming the last spot.
Round 2
The top 12 now bowled a further 3 games with pinfall carried forward. The top 5, Lee Jefferson, Mick Ince, Norman Hamed, Wayne Greenall and Ron Oldfield all retained their position with Rick Froldi on 663 over his 3 games claiming the 6th spot.
Mini Eliminator
Meanwhile the remaining 15 bowlers entered a 1 game knock out to see who could win their entry fee back. Mike Halliwell set the pace in game 1 with a 257 as he sailed past Nev Robinson. In the second round it was Michael Didur’s turn as he rolled a 266 to put out Tony Pridmore. In the semis Michael kept going with a 217 against Kevin Japp’s 197 as Frank Lindsay edged out Mike Halliwell in the best match of the Knock Out 245-234. It was 2 local bowlers in the final with Michael maintaining his form with a 209 to win the mini eliminator.
Round Robin
Norman posted his intensions with a 269 in game 1 to close up on Lee Jefferson. Game 2 saw Lee respond with a 288 to open up daylight at the top of the leader board. One of the best games of the day happened in game 3 with the 2 left handers Mick Ince and Lee Jefferson battling it out with Mick coming out on top 258-245. At this stage Lee was 164 pins ahead but bowled his worst game of the day a 155 as Norman hit a great 265 to close the gap to 100 pins. Lee still couldn’t get going in the last as Norman put in a great effort but lost to Ricky Froldi 257-235 to leave Lee deservedly top of the pile.
