Hopes were high for the 2009 season, some rule changes, a slightly different format and some new faces assembled for round one. It was the worst possible start with the Kustodian deciding it needed a rest and refused to work. 34 bowlers decided to give it a go, some wishing they had not bothered. A prize fund of £672.00 could help to soften the blow of little oil on the lanes.
Early leaders after game two were Carol Barter, Malc Bailey and Mike Taylor. After game three it was all change with Louise Roberts taking over the lead followed by Carol then Fred Lee whose 267 scr was the current high game. After the fourth the same three led but Fred over took Carol. A 268 scr from Jeff Foster in the fourth was to be the high of the day. So the final game changed fortunes again with Carol Barter’s 242 scr grabbing top spot from Louise with Ron Bryant’s 236 scr lifting him to third. Malc was in fourth Fred fifth, Mike Taylor sixth and a 259 scr from Gary Roberts moving him to seventh and Rob Scarr took the final spot. Round two was three more games, with the top four then playing a one game knock out from scratch. By the end of Round Two the lack of oil was taking it’s toll on the scores with the top three from qualifying holding on to there positions with no-one doing anything to challenge them. Gary Roberts moved from seventh to fourth to grab the last final place. So to the new format of a knockout final which was Carol v Gary and Louise v Ron. Carol finally ran out of steam losing 209 – 191 to Gary. While a close game saw Ron overcome Louise 227 – 215. The final gave Ron his first win in the tournament with a convincing win over Gary 234 – 190.
