The ninth Partycasino.com Weber Cup took place at the Barnsley Metrodome ths weekend and it featured one of the highest quality fields ever. Team America were captained by stalwart Tim Mack and was joined by for the first time by the son of the bowler it as named after, PBA star Pete Weber. They were joined by PBA stars Tommy Jones, Chris Barnes and Jason Couch. Team Europe had a new captain the two handed bowler Osku Palermaa from Finland and was joined by debutant Dominic Barrett and Paul Moor, both from England, PBA star Mike Koivuniemi from Finland and Tore Torgersen from Norway. The winner was decided by the first team to get to 17 points.
Friday Evening Session 3-3
Game 1 saw Torgersen and Barnes tie with 257 games, going to a 9th / 10th frame roll off which Barnes won 60-40. Game 2 saw Europe level the scores as Koivuniemi beat Mack 224-221. Game 3 sees USA regain the lead after Jones defeats Barrett 236-199 and extended the lead in game 4 after Couch defeated Moor 256-246. The European fightback started in game 5 with Osku Palermaa coming clse to a 300 game with the first 10 strikes for a 284 to Weber's 224 and Europe levelled the match after taking the Baker game 217-160.
Saturday Afternoon Session 7-5
Game 7 was the first of the Baker doubles and Europe took the lead for the first time after Palermaa/Koivuniemi beat Weber/Couch 258-215. Game 8 saw the scores levelled when Mack beat Torgersen 235-231 and then the USA went in front again as Jones/Barnes defeated Barrett/Moor 232-229. Game 10 saw Palermaa make another attempt at the 300 with the first nine strikes for 279 to Barnes' 238 while in game 11 saw Jones/Couch draw with Koivuniemi/Barrett with 258. A 9th/10th frame roll off still couldn't split them 39-39 so it went to a sudden death 10th frame roll off which went Europe's way 30-19. The final game of the session saw Europe extend their lead to 2 points winning the Baker 244-208.
Saturday Evening Session 8-10
Game 13 started with a strikefest as both Jones and Torgersen started with the first eight strikes but a spare from Tore in the ninth saw him finish with 268. Jones though was unstopable ans struck out for the year's first 300 game. Couch started game 14 as Jones finished the last game starting with the first eight strikes for 268 to Palermaa's 233. Weber took the fifteenth game for America 223 to Moor's 215 and Barned continued the run beating Barrett 267-238 to extend USA's lead to 2 points. Koivuniemi steadyed the ship for Europe beating Mack 287-211 but USA took the Baker game 269-178 to take a 2 point lead into the final day.
Sunday Afternoon Session 10-14
Game 19 was back to the Baker doubles and it was Barnes/Jones versus Paermaa/Barrett. It looked like it was going to be the first doubles 300 game as both teams started with the first 10 strikes but neither team could get the eleventh strike going the USA's way 289-286. Game 20 also went USA's way as Couch defeated Koivuniemi 252-192 to extend their lead to 4 points. Moor/Torgersen pulled a point back defeating Weber/Mack 279-201 but Jones defeated Palermaa 224-218 to extend their lead again. Game 23 saw Koivuniemi/Barrett defeat Barnes/Weber 279-218 and in the final game of the session, America tok the Baker game 213-206 to take a 4 point lead into the final session.
Sunday Evening Session 17-13
Palermaa started the fightback for Europe defeating Barnes 268-246 and Koivuniemi defeated Weber 257-221 to narrow the gap to 2 points. America fought back with Couch defeating Moor 226-206 and Jones defeating Barrett 258-227 to put America one point away from victory. Torgersen defeated Mack 227-184 to keep them in it but America won the Baker game 258-185 to take the Weber Cup title.
