The Belgian Senior Open, held from Wednesday 15th August to Sunday 19th August at the Bowlmaster Bowling Club in Brussels, is very popular with UK senior bowlers with a large contingent going over each year to try to claim the 2000 Euro first prize. Last year saw success from England's Ron Oldfield and Jacqui Cooper and no one would bet against further success this year.
After the first 12 games of qualifying, Herman Wimmer led on 2966 with England's Ron Deacon second on 2825. Third was Sergio Bellini with 2823 and fourth was Al Jenkins with 2822. Yves van Damme rounded out the top five with 2761. Team UKtenpin's Mo Singleton lay in thirteenth on 2682 while other leading English bowlers at that point were Ron Oldfield sixteenth on 2662, Les Grant seventeenth on 2658, Bob Winckle twenty second on 2612 and Mike Halliwell twenty fourth on 2593. USA's Danny Berardi bowled a 300 in game 10. Hildegarde Kuhn led the women's section with 2579 with England's Jacqui Cooper second on 2475. Third was Farida Pascoal-Blom on 2441 and England's June Terry was fourth with 2422. Other leading English bowlers were Brenda Pratt seventh on 2328 , Jenny Fisher eleventh on 2265 and Kaz Barfoot sixteenth on 2210. The top 24 women play a further 4 games before the cut to the top 16.
The top 48 men now played a further four games before the next cut to the top 16. Herman Wimmer continued to lead after 16 games on 3895. Al Jenkins moved up to second on 3741 and Sergio Bellini was third with 3738. England's Ron Deacon dropped to fifth on 3660 while Ron Oldfield was fifteeth on 3524. Team UKtenpin's Mo Singleton just missed out on making the cut by 6 pins on 3499 cashing for 75 Euros. The top 24 women played a further 4 games before their cut to the top 16. Hildergarde Kuhn
remained top on 3360 with Farida Pascoal-Blom moving up to second on 3233 and Jacqui Cooper third on 3214. Brenda Pratt was eighth with 3113, June Terry ninth on 3069, Kaz Barfoot eleventh on 3002 and Jenny Fisher twelfth on 2973.
Both men and women played a further 4 games before the cut to the top 8 round robin. Herman Wimmer stayed in first place on 4818 with Al Jenkins second on 4766. Barry Horne was third on 4658 and Erich Caspari bowled the second 300 game of the tournament to finish on 4638 in fourth place. Also making the cut were Ron Deacon (4585), Yves van Damme (4536), Werner Frese (4520) and Sergio Bellini (4516). Ron Oldfield missed out on 4438 in eleventh place. Hildegarde Kuhn remained top in the women's section on 4172 with Erna Buysse second on 4091 and Liliane Vintens third on 4037. Also making the cut were Farida Pascoal-Blom (4036), Jacqui Cooper (3887), Ingrid Rux (3884), Lena Dahlgren (3876) and Brenda Pratt (3846). Missing out were Kaz Barfoot in eleventh place on 3798, Jenny Fisher twelfth on 3722 and June Terry thirteenth on 3713.2362.
Al Jenkins claimed the top spot for the stepladder final on 4174 with Herman Wimmer dropping to second on 4144. Third was Erich Caspari on 4073 and fourth was Barry Horne on 4031 with Ron Deacon missing out in 3903. Erna Buysse moved from second to first for the women's final on 3747 with Hildergarde Kuhn second on 3667 and Liliane Vintens third with 3588. Farida Pascoal-Blom secured the last spot on the stepladder with 3563. Missing out were Brenda Pratt fifth on 3499 and Jacqui Cooper seventh on 3321.
In the first match on the men's stepladder, Erich Caspari defeated Barry Horne 255-245 and went on to meet Herman Wimmer but lost to Herman 244-203. In the championship match, Al Jenkins defeated Herman Wimmer to claim the title. In the women's stepladder, Farida Pascoal-Blom defeated Liliane Vintens 250-223 and was then defeated by Hildergarde Kuhn 213-206. In the championship match, Erna Buysse defeated Hildergarde Kuhn 209-169.
